Body Constitution Types and Male Sexual Diseases

Common male body constitutions can be categorized into three types: cold constitution, hot constitution, and depressive constitution.

Cold Constitution. A cold constitution includes Yang deficiency and phlegm-dampness constitutions. Those with a cold constitution are often obese, physically strong but physically weak, easily fatigued, listless, sweat excessively, produce excessive phlegm, have frequent urination with clear urine, loose stools, are afraid of cold, have cold limbs and body, and prefer hot foods. Men with this constitution are prone to male reproductive health issues such as low libido, impotence, anejaculation or premature ejaculation, cold genitals, penile retraction, scrotal sweating, low sperm motility, and infertility. From a health perspective, these individuals can consume mild and warming foods and medicines such as deer antler, ginseng, mutton, bull penis, and wolfberry.

Hot Constitution. A hot constitution includes Yin deficiency and damp-heat constitutions. Individuals with a "hot" constitution are often thin, easily agitated, have scanty or yellow urine, dry or constipated stools, and prefer cool foods and drinks to heat. These men are prone to hypersexuality, priapism (abnormal erections), premature ejaculation, nocturnal emission, low sperm motility, excessive azoospermia or abnormal sperm, prolonged or non-liquefied semen, positive antisperm antibodies, and urological diseases such as inflammatory diseases of the internal and external genitalia, allergic diseases, and reproductive tuberculosis. For health maintenance, it is important to moderate sexual activity and pay attention to genital hygiene.

Depressive constitution. A depressive constitution refers to a constitution characterized by introversion, a tendency towards melancholy, and a tendency to overthink. Men with this constitution often possess a certain level of education, but tend to have unstable personalities, fluctuating emotions, and are prone to worry. They often struggle to cope with setbacks, exhibiting mood swings, irritability, melancholy, insomnia, and vivid dreams. They are also susceptible to erectile dysfunction, nocturnal emission, premature ejaculation, and anejaculation. Treatment focuses on soothing the liver and relieving stagnation, promoting the smooth flow of Qi, with caution in the use of tonifying herbs, and avoiding pungent and drying aphrodisiac products. Mental and psychological support is also crucial.

Common Misconceptions in ED Treatment

Erectile dysfunction (ED) is a common and prevalent disease among adult men. Surveys show that the incidence of ED in men aged 40-70 is as high as 50%. Currently, there are many misconceptions regarding the diagnosis and treatment of ED.

ED is not a disease, but a natural phenomenon of aging. Currently, the vast majority of ED patients achieve good treatment results, but less than 10% of ED patients in my country seek medical treatment. This is because many patients are ashamed to talk about it due to traditional beliefs, even considering it a normal part of aging and not a disease. Many private clinics lack proper urology facilities, and many doctors lack systematic training, resulting in insufficient understanding of erectile dysfunction (ED) and hindering its timely detection and treatment. Therefore, men experiencing this should consult a reputable hospital to avoid delaying treatment.

ED is often caused by psychological factors. Normal penile erection requires the coordination of blood vessels, nerves, psychology, hormones, and the corpora cavernosa. Abnormalities in any of these factors can lead to erectile dysfunction. Previously, ED was primarily believed to be caused by psychological factors, but recent data shows that over 50% of ED cases are caused by organic factors. Since the treatments for these two causes differ, recognizing that ED is mostly caused by organic factors is very helpful for early and appropriate diagnosis and treatment.

"Viagra" is a panacea. Treatment for erectile dysfunction (ED) includes correcting risk factors, treating the underlying disease, sex counseling and education, and oral and topical medications. Oral medications are the first-line treatment for ED. Sildenafil (Viagra) is currently the preferred oral medication for ED. It does not induce an erection on its own; it only works in the presence of sexual stimulation. Therefore, it is unreasonable to consider it a panacea.
